Mission & engagement

To empower young people and students to use open mapping, data, and technology to create positive social change—strengthening communities, improving resilience, and supporting humanitarian response through collaboration with the global Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team.

Spread Global Awareness

We train and engage young people and students to use open mapping and geospatial tools to address local challenges, support disaster response, and contribute to global humanitarian and development efforts through the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team network.

Organize grant funding

We bring together passionate youth, students, educators, volunteers, and local community members eager to learn, collaborate, and create impact through open mapping. Our network includes universities, civil society, and humanitarian partners who share our vision of using open data for good.

Our History

The OpenStreetMap (OSM) Liberia Community emerged in 2015 during the aftermath of the Ebola outbreak. In a time when reliable maps were scarce, a small group of passionate volunteers came together to support the national and global response through mapping. Their goal was simple yet powerful—to make Liberia visible on the map and help responders reach communities in need.

What began as a volunteer initiative grew into a movement. The early team focused on rural mapping in Nimba County and the southern parts of Liberia, where geographic data was largely missing. Through collaboration with the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) and YouthMappers, the community developed skills in open mapping, data collection, and geospatial technology.

Today, OSM Liberia stands as a growing network of youth, students, and volunteers dedicated to using open data for humanitarian response, development planning, and community empowerment. From its roots in crisis response, it has evolved into a national platform for open mapping and digital innovation.
